RV Service FAQ's

Why is my air conditioner not cooling?
This time of the year we are asked this question several times a day.  In most cases the customers air condtioner is cooling, just not enough.  That brings the next question, what is enough.  On most RV air conditioners the output (cold) air should be around 20 degrees cooler than the input (return) air.  To better explain this, if the temperature inside your RV is 95 degrees the air conditioner will produce approximatly 75 degree air.  This of course will drop as the interior of the RV cools.  Most problems that we see are due to lack of air flow (dirty filters) or due to not understanding how to use the air conditioner.  When running the A/C you should always keep the fan speed on high and keep the thermostat set to where the compressor can cycle.  On very hot days this may mean setting the thermostat at 75-77 degrees.  If you have any other questions, click here and select service and we'll try to help you with your problem.
When should I get my bearings packed and brakes checked?
This is a very common question that I will answer with the recommendation of the axle manufacturers.  They recommend that the hubs be disassemble and inspected with a complete bearing pack every 12,000 miles or every 1 year.  With today's trailers having bearing buddies (grease inserts on the end of the dust cap) most RVers feel that bearing packs are not needed.  Just inserting grease in the bearing cavity does not safely maintain the bearings.  Inspection of the bearings, races and of the braking system is vital for safety.  If you do choose to add grease by injecting through a grease sert make sure not to add to much.  It is very easy to blow grease past the bearing seals and imbed your brakes with grease.  If you have injected to much grease it can turn into a costly repair as the magnets and shoes will have to be replaced.  We generally run specials on bearing packs and brake inspections.  For your safety call and schedule with us at least once a year. Question: “I have a 2006 Montana 5th wheel with the Arctic Insulation package.  With this package, I thought the unit would be tight as a drum.  Last winter, I trapped six mice inside the unit (slides in, everything closed up), then two more during the summer.  With such a sealed unit, how are they getting in?”

Answer: “Bruce, You are correct about the unit having the arctic insulation package. This package is intended to help keep the unit from freezing in colder temperatures. Unfortunately the package does not completely seal the unit. Rodents will find places to get in on any RV. A big problem besides mice is squirrels. I have had RV'ers tell me they use mothballs to prevent rodents. I have yet to see a sure fired way to keep them out. So you can rest assured, that you have the additional benefit of the arctic package which is designed to help prevent freezing. As for the rodents, I found a great little article on some suggestions.
